We are pleased to announce the launch of our research project, “Integration of Mobile Communication Networks and Sensor Networks for Enhancing Public Safety and Smart City Infrastructures.”
The project aims to develop a scalable and interoperable Internet of Things (IoT) framework that integrates large-scale sensor networks with 4G and 5G mobile communication systems. At its core, the initiative will implement a cloud-based architecture enabling dynamic, bidirectional communication: collecting real-time data from distributed sensors while also transmitting control commands for remote activation and system management.
Addressing Integration and Operational Challenges
A central challenge addressed by the project is the coordinated management of heterogeneous IoT devices operating across different communication protocols. In many existing deployments, distributed sensing systems function in isolation, generating fragmented data streams that limit real-time situational awareness and coordinated decision-making in time-critical public safety scenarios.
INTERPLAY addresses this systemic gap by enabling structured integration, interoperability and adaptive response across sensing and communication layers, ensuring efficient data exchange, and long-term scalability across diverse operational environments, including urban, suburban, and rural areas.
Key Innovation Areas
Key innovation areas include:
- Adaptive protocol selection to optimize performance under varying network conditions.
- Artificial Intelligence methods for advanced data processing and predictive analytics.
- Real-time decision-making mechanisms for time-critical applications.
- Validation through real-world demonstrations.
Use Cases – Smart Response for Emergency Situations
The project will deliver a platform titled “Smart Response for Emergency Situations,” structured around four primary use cases:
- Fire detection and early warning
- Flood monitoring and risk assessment
- Structural health monitoring of critical infrastructure (e.g. bridges)
- Environmental monitoring to support public health protection
By combining advanced networking technologies, intelligent data analytics, and field validation, the project seeks to address the technical and operational challenges of large-scale sensor integration, with emphasis on adaptability, security, reliability, and efficiency.
